CREW Greater Philadelphia member Carlo L. Batts, MAI has been a go-to source for media outlets for his perspectives on the appraisal industry, specifically surrounding the inaccuracies and bias present in home appraisals for people of color.
In March 2023 WHYY covered this story and interviewed Carlo for his point of view on the reasons why for this long-standing yet overlooked subject. They also got his feedback on what the potential impact could be on the recently suggested changes to the training of appraisers.
In December 2022 6abc interviewed Carlo for a feature story about an analysis of Federal Housing Finance Agency data from 2018 to 2020. The analysis showed at least 18,922 homes sold in Pennsylvania were appraised below market value. Of those, over 1,700 were in Philadelphia and much more common in majority-minority neighborhoods. A few months prior to that Yahoo Money spoke with Carlo about the subject.
Carlo is Principal of Rittenhouse Appraisals, a commercial real estate appraisal firm which focuses on the Greater Delaware Valley. He is a designated member of The Appraisal Institute and has been a member of CREW since 2021.
